Seventeen-year-old Aubrey Scott has everything going for her; she is top of her class at her Manhattan all-girls prep school, a rising, swimming star, and sure to get into her dream school, Columbia University on a swimming scholarship. When Aubrey’s mother tragically dies in a car accident on her way to one of Aubrey’s swim meets, she blames herself and quits swimming. Aubrey is forced to leave Manhattan to live with her father and his family in rural North Carolina, withdrawing from the life she once knew and loved. She is determined to keep everyone shut out, and not let anyone know how much she is suffering.

Everything changes when Aubrey meets Landon Ward, the current candidate for Valedictorian at New Hill High, and his service dog, Finn. Landon is charming, handsome, smart, and a star swimmer, but has a secret, troubled past. When Landon shares his secrets with Aubrey, the two connect on a deep level, making it difficult for Aubrey to keep Landon at a distance and to avoid her previous life. Aubrey learns that she doesn’t have to suffer alone and that she can live life and find love, even when it seems impossible.
